1. What is the story behind your twitch channel name?
Originally my channel name was just my PSN gamertag Fodda82, short for CanonFodder (previous battlenet, xbox gamertags) which I was always called as when i play my staple genre of fps I was always the first and usually only one to die in a firefight... I only renamed and themed my channel at the start of January as I felt like i needed a theme and direction, so as I am a massive whovian, sci fi geek and avid con go-er I thought i rebrand as me as a person, Ii checked twitch and was extremely lucky to find TheGeek as an available name... so I'm running with it.
2. What is your video game history/background and all time favourite game?
One word: BATTLEFIELD... I started out as a pc gamer and have played every battlefield title and expansion that has come out... with the exception of 2142. I've dabbled with COD but only for single player campaigns, i buy them once they are on discount sales and once completed they are traded in.
My all time favourite game to date is Battlefield: Vietnam... that game had an awesome soundtrack and you could turn on the radio and flick through the songs. I'd be flying the hueys and my long time friend (who joins me in the stream on party chat) would be side gunner and we would strafe the poor sods below with to the sounds of flight of the valkyries.
3. What/who inspired you to start streaming? / 4. When did you start streaming?
I am in a star trek online clan called the weekend warriors and our clan leader decided to do a 24hr charity stream on twitch, having never streamed before and I was able to join in for his last 5 to 6 hours (the rest of the clan members had been coming in and out during to support him too) and we all had a great time, afterwards he had caught the bug and started regularly streaming not long after... over the last 6 months I had found myself able to jump in on the games he was playing during his stream and I was loving the interaction we all had with him and his stream... so one day i asked him if he would help me get started on twitch, he took me under his wing and helped me set everything up and still nudges me today as well as popping into my stream regularly as i do his, my viewers know him as Dogbeatr :)
5. How did you find the first few weeks/months of streaming? (any funny stories/mistakes/highlights?)
My first few weeks of streaming are cringe worthy I was so nervous being in front of a webcam and found it daunting to be talking to myself for the majority of the stream of my chat was empty on the off chance someone appeared.
As I was still new to it all I was forever making silly mistakes like forgetting to change to the game scene.. or have my mic or game or both muted for ages without realising, I still forget the mic now sometimes lmao
6. How did you grow your stream? How did you network?
Dogbeatr was very instrumental in my channels growth from the start, on my first stream he made a big thing of checking in on me as part of his his stream and when his stream ended he raided me.
He still raids me every now and then and hosts me everytime his stream is done. He also advised me to look for a join a streaming community to network and make friends which I did, I am currently with Storm Chaser Army and Team BNN (which I found after leaving Team Emmmmsie a short while ago)
7. What has been your proudest moment while streaming?
My proudest moment of streaming was getting the affiliate status live on stream... I was so stoked but completely shocked as I didnt think I had streamed enough days to get it. It turned out that twitch counts one stream starting before midnight and ending after midnight as two seperate streaming days even though its one stream.
It also again was down to Dogbeatr as his raids gave me the average 3 viewers needed too.... and this all happened a month after I had started streaming…
8. How did you find the technical side of streaming? Setting up your stream, etc?
The technical side still noggles at me now and then, Dogbeatr advised me on the software needed and some that's useful and helped me set it up to get going and from then I've tweaked as I've gone and improved bits here and there, I'm constantly tinkering but now I've got things how i want them I've now adopted the of it aint broke, dont fix it mantra...
I pay that help and advice i received when I first started out forward and help other new streamers with their setups if i see them needing it in a stream... the only thing I have issues with now, which atm is out of my control is the PS remote software plays up alot.. until I can get my capture card working properly soon and then im all sorted.
9. What do you enjoy most about your streaming career
It's the viewers and the interaction with the chat... one stream we were having an in depth discussion of food combinations and hot drinks that may or may not work and later on we are heavily debating the best crisps, 10 minutes later and it’s which actress would make a better wonder woman.
I just love the randomness, sometimes i forget I’m playing a game at all lol
10. What don't you enjoy so much about streaming?
Tbh I was going to say trolls, but as of yet luckily it's not really been an issue, plus I have a good mod team that nips it in the bud before I've really noticed it so I’d say atm I’m not really not enjoying anything so far... I love it.I do all my own graphical or video editing for everything on my channel and that's awesome too cos like I said, I love tinkering.
11. What are you short term and long term goals for your stream?
My goal short term is to have fun and entertain others while I’m doing it, if i get a sub/bits/donations in the process that's awesome but not expected. I’m not pushing for anything atm as one of my daughters is heavily disabled and is due to have spinal correction surgery very soon so my main focus is her and her recovery but once she has recovered fully it would be great to go for partner but that would likely be in the distant future, right now I would just like to build my regular viewers and keep them entertained.
12. What advice would you give anyone looking to start streaming?
I would advise anyone looking to stream to ask themselves one question 1st... are you doing it for the chance of extra money and internet fame? If you answer yes to it then don't start streaming. Because it doesn't work that way and when you push for people to throw money at you and strive for fame you will burn out very quickly when you realise it's not instant and then you'll get miffed and stop doing it...
Streaming should be for enjoyment and fun not just for you but for everyone else... yes streamers can get big followings and a regular income from it but it take years and dedication... it's a marathon not a sprint.... start small, join communities, network with other like minded streamers, build friendships, build a rapport and community with your viewers.
If they feel comfortable in your streams, they will become regulars and they will tell their friends to drop in "cos he's a great/funny/entertaining/friendly guy". At the end of the day your viewers are what makes your channel successful so as long as you treat them well and keep them happy, you will be happy too.
13. Finally, what other streamers do you enjoy watching?
First and Foremost my mentor Dogbeatr over at his channel The Dog House, close second is a new friend I made a short time ago but feels like I’ve always known called Vanjamme his channel is awesome and he is like the school friend you always hung out with and shared comics with as a kid, we both have a love for the same geeky things.
Then there is Abbydarkstar a US cosplayer whose streams I’ve been watching for a loooong time. His husband Keith is the disembodied voice on her stream and the play wow, hearthstone, pubg and it's the chat interaction they have which is top notch as well as they are both funny and quirky as well... then there are a list of people I try to catch online like triplevenomelite, pixlebun, otssfozzard, luna_nite, gaming__cave, frankensteinmetal, ForgottenVampire, dauntlex, yorkshiredad, mdrags06, therealbaggins, rcallie.... the list goes on lol
TheGeek is a twitch streamer with a difference, who streams mainly fps games, mixed with geek chat and a streamer of the week segment, with more in the works to come...
You can find him and all his geeky goodness at www.twitch.tv/thegeek and on twitter at www.twitter.com/fodda82
