1. What is the story behind your twitch channel name?
I have been using this name ever since I had to pick a username way back in school. There is no real meaning behind it, and no - it doesn’t mean I really like a certain cheese.
2. What is your video game history/background and all time favourite game?
I have been playing games ever since I was a ‘young un’ starting on a commodore 64 heading onto the atari 2600, master system, mega drive, snes, playstation, xbox 360 and currently doing all my gaming on a pc and ps4. During the era of the xbox I didn’t have much time for playing as real life happened and only in the past few years have I been able to pick up gaming again.
My all time favourite game has got to be the original sonic games, I have fond memories of playing with my mother and staying up late as we try to get as far as we can on just one life.
3. What/who inspired you to start streaming?
I had been watching a fair few streamers and enjoyed interacting with them as a viewer and enjoyed how they interacted with us, I thought how cool it would be to do the same whilst doing something I enjoy - gaming! So I did
4. When did you start streaming?
I first started to test the water in November / December 2017.
5. How did you find the first few weeks/months of streaming? (any funny stories/mistakes/highlights?)
The first month was a mess really :) I didn’t really do any meaningful self-promotion other than the twitch auto twitter posting, on one of my streams I only noticed that you couldn’t actually hear when I was talking until the end of stream and I watched the vod.
6. How did you grow your stream? How did you network?
The main growth has come from the TeamBNN network, I noticed a streamer had it set in the community and decided to investigate more. I got involved in the community and hung out in many of the streams and was enjoying interacting with a lot of people.
This in turn meant that people I were visiting were also checking out my stream, we felt in it all together. *advice mode* There is no expectation of this though so don’t feel you are owed anything by checking out someones stream.
I also use twitter a bit better now, rather than just the twitch auto share I tailor the messages etc for what I am playing now.
7. What has been your proudest moment while streaming?
I am still a relative newbie to the game, so currently my proudest moment is making affiliate.
8. How did you find the technical side of streaming? Setting up your stream, etc?
I found it fairly easy to setup, I use stream-labs obs so a lot of things are made to make it easier, there is always constant tweaking that needs to happen though with audio etc
9. What do you enjoy most about your streaming career
I enjoy the viewer interaction and sharing in the success or failures of what I am playing, getting to play what I enjoy all the time is a plus too :D
10. What don't you enjoy so much about streaming?
You have those days where you focus too much on views and wonder if it is worth it, or maybe you should be doing a different game that you may not enjoy. It can be easy to burn out.
11. What are you short term and long term goals for your stream?
I don’t feel I have “nailed” the branding of my channel so short term I want to focus on that, long term would be increasing the viewer base to be a consistent amount.
12. What advice would you give anyone looking to start streaming?
You cannot expect to be a huge streamer quickly, you will have days where no-one will be watching and you just have to keep on grinding - because it is a grind.
Do on stream what you enjoy doing, not what you think people want to watch otherwise you will come to hate it.
Get someone / anyone to help you check stream quality and levels etc make sure they are brutally honest, as viewers will be.
Try to talk as much as you can, explain what you are doing if you can. If there are moments where you are concentrating and won’t be as focused on chat make sure they know, I have started saying “concentration intensifies” and they know that I will be a bit quieter.
Make sure alert sounds are setup, viewers like being acknowledged for an action they have performed towards you. If you miss it, you may lose them.
TAKE A BREAK: during stream take 5 mins here and there at a natural rest point, have days off from streaming.
13. Finally, what other streamers do you enjoy watching?
The main big overwatch names are Lassiz and Emongg, there are plenty in the TeamBNN community who I enjoy watching also and I won’t name out of fairness.
All I am saying is that if you have loots.com enabled on your stream and advertise the fact then you should expect puns from me…..
ementalo is a twitch streamer who mainly streams Overwatch and a community choice at weekends..
You can find him at www.twitch.tv/ementalo and on twitter www.twtter.com/ementalo
