1. What is the story behind your Twitch channel name?
It took me forever to come up with Fran Plays, I wanted to have a really great channel name and I thought it was really genius and original, I was like ‘This is fantastic! How has no one else thought of this?’. Turns out quite a few people have thought of it...
2. What is your video game history/background and all time favourite game?
I was raised playing video games, my parents actually bought my brother and sister a PS1 because they really were not happy about having a new baby sister so I was pretty much born with a controller in my hands!
My favourite game has got to be Medal of Honor: Allied Assault but Skyrim is definitely a close second.
3. What/who inspired you to start streaming?
This is kind of a weird answer but when I started streaming I didn’t actually know what streaming was… I was (and am) a huge fan of Achievement Hunter and I wanted to start my own youtube but I didn’t have a PC, so the only way I could record my gameplay was by streaming it to Twitch and then downloading the stream afterwards. It didn’t take long though for me to fall in love with streaming!
4. When did you start streaming?
I think it was March 2015.
5. How did you find the first few weeks/months of streaming? (any funny stories/mistakes/highlights?)
Uuuugh…. Well, as I mentioned before I didn’t actually know what streaming was and I’d only ever been on Twitch to create an account, so during my very first stream I didn’t even have the chat open not knowing that the chat was actually thing.
Luckily I learnt and I got much better at streaming but because of college it was difficult to get time to stream so I’d maybe stream once every month or two. It made the first couple of months extremely nerve-wracking, I’d feel really sick every time I went to start streaming but I’m really glad I did!
6. How did you grow your stream? How did you network?
Mainly just posting on Twitter and sometimes Instagram. I’m not really great at networking so I’m only just starting to get involved with other streamers and communities. Honestly I think I owe most of my growth to my awesome mods and regulars, my mods are constantly coming up with new ideas and bringing new people to the stream.
If it wasn’t for them always being there and teaching me the ways of Twitch I don’t think I would have had half as much of the growth I have had.
7. What has been your proudest moment while streaming?
It’s a toss up of either becoming an affiliate or hitting 1,000 followers. I’m extremely proud of both of these moments, neither of them were easy to achieve and I am grateful to everyone who helped me get to them.
8. How did you find the technical side of streaming? Setting up your stream, etc?
I really enjoy it, doesn’t mean I’m particularly good at it though. I work with what I’ve got so it doesn’t always go smoothly but we have fun with it. Again, I’m very lucky to have my mods, they’re forever fixing things for me or giving me their opinions on new logos, overlays, emotes or whatever else I’ve been working on!
9. What do you enjoy most about your streaming career?
The friends I’ve made through it, I’ve never really had friends who were particularly interested in games or anything even remotely nerdy so it’s really nice having like-minded people to talk to and have fun with.
10. What don't you enjoy so much about streaming?
There’s not really a whole lot not to enjoy about streaming but my least favourite thing, and this is going to sound really weird, is how I have to pretty much be constantly talking. I’ve always been really quiet, I much prefer to listen to other people talk rather than talk myself so it can sometimes be hard to talk so much for so long, especially if the chat’s quiet, but I’ve gotten used to it and it’s actually had an amazing effect on my confidence outside of streaming!
11. What are you short term and long term goals for your stream?
Short term, I’d really like to increase my average viewers to 15-20. We’re getting there but it’s slow going. Long term, I’d love to make twitch partner!
It’s a big goal but I’d like to think it’s a doable goal.
12. What advice would you give anyone looking to start streaming?
Just start. You don’t need any fancy equipment and chances are you already have what you do need. Don’t worry either if you’re not great straightaway (trust me, you can’t be worse than not even realising there’s a chat), every stream you’ll improve and get more comfortable with it until streaming’s just second nature.
Something I found really useful when I was just starting out and I still do now is before you go live listen to music you love that gets you pumped up and just talk out loud to yourself. That way when you go live you’re already used to talking to yourself! Good luck!
13. Finally, what other streamers do you enjoy watching?
SweetMasquerade, GeekAndGamerGirl and a couple just starting out, Franchesca_3, FlipLucca, Fire_AtWill, mitchy_poo and packmastertony!
