Time we kicked this interview series back into gear! Shall we get to know some cool Internet people?... Lets!
Shall we start we me as a guinea pig...? Only fair for me to be the first and see how painful it can be...
1. What is the story behind your channel name?
JoeR247 has been my gaming name ever since I created my Xbox live account on the XBox 360, my first foray into online gaming and its stuck ever since, not much more to add.
2. What is your video game history/background and all time favourite game?
First ever game was Sonic the Hedgehog on the Sega mega drive, not a bad place to start I guess... From there I think I've had every console and handheld going! Favourite all time games have to be Theme Hospital and the Football Manager series... An unhealthy amount of hours have been devoured by them
3. What/Who inspired you to start creating content on the internet?
I have always watched youtubers (NerdCubed/Ashens/Two Best Friends Play/DoctorBenjy) and been inspired by them, wanted to copy them but I never thought I could do it as well as them. Eventually I finally picked up the courage to hit the Stream now button and I regret not doing so years ago!
4. When did you start creating content on the internet?
Properly started in December 2017, made affiliate by January and just going onwards and upwards from here on out!
5. How did you find the first few weeks/months of content creation? (any funny stories/mistakes/highlights?)
Very nervously, a lot of mistakes (streams with no audio, game capture set missing half the screen, streaming at a too high bitrate so nobody could watch it on lower speed Internet. When I finally got my first set of regulars I couldn't wait to stream every day, the feeling you get when you see your usuals appear in chat is amazing and I wouldn't have come this far without them!
6. How did you grow your channel? How did you network?
At first I would just spam my link on twitter and Facebook and hope for the best, but then I found some Twitch and nerd communities and the lovely bunch of people it contained! From there I was as active as I could possibly be and developed friendships, visited their streams, they visited mine and it took off from there! I then with the help of some fellow members setup our own community called #WeAreHIVE and created an awesome discord for all types of nerd/geek/gamer/content creator to hang out.
7. What has been your proudest moment so far?
Proudest moment for me was one night I was going to bed, and then an email appeared saying you did it, your hard work paid off with an invite to become affiliate! I wasn't expecting it at all and was so giddy I sacrificed sleep to complete all the sign up process!
The 2nd proudest moment was When I was invited to SEGA Europe HQ in London and got to play a preview of Two Point Hospital. I went to the event and met awesome people such as SIPS, Jonti Sparrow, Aavak, VoodooGoat, Blarla! I then got to interview the developers for a video (Don't record stuff like this using a mobile phone FYI...) and a preview key to the game to stream before the release.
Later on, I got invited to take part in the launch day event of the game with SEGA, which involved being hosted on Twitch by the Official SEGA twitch account after Aavak. I think that's when I peaked as a content creator...
8. How did you find the technical side of content creation? Setting up your channel, etc?
I work in IT so i love the technical side of streaming! I find myself constantly looking for ways to tweak and improve all aspects about my stream, the overlays, the bots, the logos and branding. I've been using OBS from the start and it's so easy to use and mess about and tinker with.
9. What do you enjoy most about your content creation hobby/career?
Streaming is super enjoyable for me, its a way to interact with like minded people and have a laugh (at my skills or lack of) and create a community vibe. It's dead simple to do as well, I just switch my computer on and delve into the game and chat with my viewers. My theory is, I'd be playing these games anyway, why not broadcast it to the world and see who is interested!
10. What don't you enjoy so much about your content creation hobby/career?
I've not come across many downsides to streaming yet (and I hope it stays that way) but it can be hard in the beginning when you don't have many active viewers, or when the chat goes quiet. But the key thing is to never stop chatting and trying to interact. After all, you are the entertainer people have come to see.
11. What are you short term and long term goals for your channel/s?
Short term goals are to reach 1,000 followers. 700 ish now so a decent target. The long term super unrealistic goal is to somehow make twitch partner, but that seems impossible at this stage, but who knows what the future holds...
12. What advice would you give anyone looking to get into content creation?
Never give up, even when it seems like your not getting anywhere or any views. Keep on chatting and vocalise you thoughts on your stream, narrate your game play constantly. You never know who is lurking and if I came to a stream with the streamer sat in silence, I'd soon lose interest and move on. Join a community of streamers and content creators and network and make friends with everyone, go into other people's streams and comment on their stream, they may remember you can come visit you when you're live. Finally Google and Youtube are your friends for all things streaming! There are guides to everything you could ever think of!
13. Finally, what other content creators do you enjoy watching and recommend people check out?
NerdCubed, DoctorBenjy, WobblyRedman23, Maelchon, GGAAHHHHH and many more! Too many to list
