1. What is the story behind your channel name?
Metzgirl is my name most places - Metzger is German for Butcher so it's, effectively, butcher girl.
2. What is your video game history/background and all time favourite game?
I suck at all video games, but I play older games usually for fun. I'm enjoying Assassin's Creed 2 right now. My streaming/podcasting is mostly related to D&D5e.
3. What/Who inspired you to start creating content on the internet?
My first content was my book review videos on YouTube, driven by Hank and John Green's example and fueled by their audience. Podcasts were driven by my love of the medium and the McElroy and Green brothers. I needed something that required focus and learning to help me get away from alcohol.
Beholder's Eye I was invited to join after they already had a steady base.
Mimic Knights on Welcome Party RPG started as a one shot that we loved so much we made it a regular thing.
4. When did you start creating content on the internet?
2009 for Youtube, May 2018 for my podcast, Service Desk.
5. How did you find the first few weeks/months of content creation? (any funny stories/mistakes/highlights?)
My content at the time was released as I finished books. Not particularly regular, and at the time I was recording via a little point and shoot camera with no external mic. I had no video editing software, so I did everything one shot and often didn't notice when I made silly mistakes like say the character names wrong or Listing the title of the video incorrectly. It was a bit of a hot mess.
For Service Desk, our first episode was completely eaten by Audacity. I pushed back the starting date and we just let that episode fade out of existence.
6. How did you grow your channel? How did you network?
Book tube was great - between Twitter and other people's YouTube recommendations I grew a little.
For Service Desk, I am on Twitter for the podcast, for myself, and I spread word via a couple Facebook groups. We cross polinate with other creators by having them guest on the show.
For Beholder's Eye, I tweet, post new episodes in multiple places in Facebook, and post on my 30+ discord channels everytime an episode drops. Right now I have a give away going to try to increase reviews for both Service Desk and Beholder's Eye.
7. What has been your proudest moment so far?
Inviting and getting Kyle of BomBARDed to join a charity stream with me.
Having Josh of Sneak Attack and Titans of All'Terra tell me he's listened to Beholder's Eye and telling his discord server about it.
Guesting on other people's shows in general.
8. How did you find the technical side of content creation? Setting up your channel, etc?
It's all a matter of learning the processes. For Podcasts, the worst part is getting things to iTunes, Google Play, Stitcher, etc. Spotify is the worst. It's all in who you pick to host. pinecast is pretty simple and relatively cheap, Fireside gets you into Spotify but costs more.
I don't mess with Twitch, but I'm sure OBS would be fine once I played with it.
9. What do you enjoy most about your content creation hobby/career?
People meeting. The podcast community with MBMBaM podcasters and the TTRPG community have almost all been lovely, delightful people. Even if I don't break 100 subs on Service Desk, the people I've met have made this whole venture worth it.
10. What don't you enjoy so much about your content creation hobby/career?
Schedules. I want to do all the things but I work full time and have 2 children. I want to be on everyone's show but scheduling makes it hard.
11. What are you short term and long term goals for your channel/s?
Service Desk: 200 subscribers and get one of the McElroy brothers to come teach us... Anything. I'll invent a topic. Cover expenses.
Beholder's Eye: 3000 subscribers/month, bring in money enough to cover expenses.
12. What advice would you give anyone looking to get into content creation?
Get the minimum starting equipment and do it. Ask for help and be willing to change. Also keep a schedule. Start slower and you can add in more as you get used to it.
13. Finally, what other content creators do you enjoy watching and recommend people check out?
On Twitch: CastleMac, SoulBearRPG, SoMattyGamez, Thanrand.
Podcasts: Another Path, Fate and the Fablemaidens, LCP DND, BomBARDed, TheMWord
