JoeR247 Interviews... Viper Racing

May 13, 2019

1. What is the story behind your channel name?

I am a big of the Dodge Viper and love racing games and hence putting the Viper and Racing parts together and bam there ya go.

Unfortunately I did not realise until after I had my name changed that there was a racing game released in 1998 which had the same name so yeah oops :P

2. What is your video game history/background and all time favourite game?

Started playing racing games from a young age on the original PlayStation and have kind of gone from there really, I'm also interested in the history of video games as a whole as I find it so interesting and have even had the pleasure of playing on classic arcade cabinets such as the original Space Invaders and Galaga :D

3. What/Who inspired you to start creating content on the internet?

I think it was a mixture between a close friend of mine and TheSyndicateProject from YouTube and between the two it encouraged me to start making videos of my own, albeit the videos weren't the greatest as the quality of my webcam was awful and I didn't have a setup but I think overall the quality of the videos came with upgrading equipment and getting the right capturing equipment too.

4. When did you start creating content on the internet?

September 2010 I think it was although I don't remember the exact date ;)

6. How did you find the first few weeks/months of content creation? (any funny stories/mistakes/highlights?)

At first it was hard for me as I didn't know what I was doing, my main highlight when I was first started out was one of the videos hitting 100 views within a week.

It never really grew much past 100 views but I saw as a really good achievement considering I'd only just started YouTube at the time.

Then came a major hit with a I'm a Celebrity game video that I did and that hit past 5K views in no time to my amazement and since then I've had a few hits over the years.

7. How did you grow your channel? How did you network?

I grew my channel via just being kind (After all it doesn't cost anything to be kind right?) and not forcing people to do anything that don't want to.

For example when I used to make YouTube videos I always used to say "Be sure to subscribe and hit the like button" but then I started streaming and changed my approach to "If someone wants to follow me then feel to do so however don't feel like you have to just because it's there" and the same goes for donations and subscriptions too. In terms of networking I used to be part of the F1 gaming community and kind of got my name around that way, now however it is mainly through the various speedrunning communities and the WeAreHIVE community too :D

8. What has been your proudest moment so far?

My proudest moment was at the end of 2015 when I'd been making videos all year long and to see my sub count double over the year, I made a video showing off the entire year as a whole and the videos I made and to this day still see that as the best year I had for YouTube, Twitch however was a different one as I mainly started on that properly in Late 2016 and over the last few years my proudest moment from that was over the last few years building my own small community.

9. How did you find the technical side of content creation? Setting up your channel, etc?

At first it seemed confusing to me however when I gave it time and looked into everything a bit more carefully it became a lot less scarier than it looked, for me Twitch was easier to setup than YouTube but for others it might the other way around.

10. What do you enjoy most about your content creation hobby/career?

Playing some of my favourite games on stream is always a good time, however speedrunning my favourite games is even more fun for me as I'm always challenging myself to see how fast I can complete that game and if I can be current personal best time.

Overall this always makes it fun for me no matter when I stream or what I stream that way

11. What don't you enjoy so much about your content creation hobby/career?

Trying to work around my full time job is always a pain as is at the weekend when you've got family members round sometimes but when I do get to stream I try to ensure it makes up for it.

12. What are you short term and long term goals for your channel/s?

Short term goal is to enjoy myself when I stream, long term goal is to get to 1000 followers and see where we go from there.

Don't get me wrong I'd love to do streaming full time like most people however I don't think I could do streaming every day doing speedrunning stuff as I've tried it in the past where I've done it for 3 months straight and found it to be extremely tiring after about a month so really I'm all in streaming for the fun now :)

13. What advice would you give anyone looking to get into content creation?

Think this goes without saying but do not go into YouTube, Twitch or any big social platform thinking you can make it. Granted it is nice to dream big but given the amount of people that are trying to do the same thing it isn't worth it.

By all means feel free to try and do it but don't go into streaming or making videos on YouTube thinking you'll be able to make loads of money as that shouldn't be your main concern. The main factor should be fun, try and build a community around yourself and slowly but surely the results will come.

Also I'd recommend playing games that you want to play not NEED to play as otherwise people will detect this and not watch you as much as they should.

The biggest one is to make friends with people as much as possible however do not go jumping into the biggest streamer's/YouTubers DM's as quick as possible as they probably won't read your messages so instead I'd recommend trying to find other people that are around your size and have something in common with you.

14. Finally, what other content creators do you enjoy watching and recommend people check out?

Would highly recommend watching a streamer who goes by the name of KZ_Frew on Twitch as for me he's quite casual and his streams are always fun to watch and because I'm a speedrunner fan I enjoy it more for his GTA Vice City speedruns that he does most times :D

Another that I can recommend that is similar to myself but much bigger is KuruHS, again he is a very cool guy and can be quite funny and he does a lot of racing speedruns so I find myself in his streams quite a bit too.

Thebpg13 is a racing speedrunner who streams racing games to be one of the best racing speedrunners around, he loves rallying and is heavily involved in the Colin McRae community.
