JoeR247 Interviews... Beckmech

1. What is the story behind your channel name?

I used to go by the name of Ren for a long but there’s a lot of people using that name around so I chose to use something a bit more original. An old friend used to call it me when I used to tank in WoW, Beckmech.

2. What is your video game history/background and all-time favourite game?

So as you know I make games for a living at Rebellion Oxford in the UK. I’m a Level Designer by trade and absolutely love it. I’ve been playing games since I was very young on my Dad’s Atari 2600 on an old 5 inch black and white TV.

Favourite game, that’s such a tough question. Do I go with the longest play time and game that I keep going back to, Counter-Strike. Or the game which inspired me to get into game development, Shenmue. Then of course there’s the classics like Half-Life and my guilty pleasure, Guild Wars. There’s just too many to choose from!

3. What/Who inspired you to start creating content on the internet?

I enjoy playing games and sometimes I play some older or lesser known games and thought there might be some people who would enjoy watching someone play it. So I just started streaming everything I play. I play games for fun and I stream for fun too – If people stop by and say hi and enjoy watching me play that’s enough for me.

4. When did you start creating content on the internet?

I’ve been quite a few game streams here at Rebellion for the past few years but I started streaming at home only within the last 6 months or so.

5. What is your content creation setup. Specs and accessories?

CPU: Intel i7 6700k

Mobo: Asus Maximus VIII Hero

RAM: Corsair Vengeance 16GB DDR4

GPU: Asus Strix GTX 980Ti

Monitor: BenQ XL2720Z 27 inch 144hz

6. How did you find the first few weeks/months of content creation? (any funny stories/mistakes/highlights?)

I quite enjoyed it. It was nice having random people pop in, even if just for a few minutes, to say hi and drop me a follow because I was playing their favourite game or whatever.

There were a few too many occasions where I left my microphone muted after starting the stream during the early days. Chat would be talking between themselves and I thought I was talking back. I wasn’t… Thankfully I think I’ve broken that habit now!

7. How did you grow your channel? How did you network?

I just turned on my stream. Early on I did announce I was streaming on Twitter but I don’t think any of my followers cared so I just let people come to me if they wanted. Some of my followers will let people know in Discord channels that I’m going live and such but for the most part I just play.

8. What has been your proudest moment so far?

It was my first time playing Void Bastards one night and I got quite a few viewers who were all active in chat and such so I just kept playing for them. Got a fair few followers that night and a few of them said they were going to buy the game based on my gameplay alone so I guess I helped an indie developer and also entertained some people. Ended up playing until about 4am.

It's been great streaming for Rebellion too. The community is great fun to play and talk with and knowing something I helped create can give people some entertainment makes me feel pretty good!

9. How did you find the technical side of content creation? Setting up your channel, etc?

I’m pretty tech savvy so it was quite simple after a quick Google.

10. What do you enjoy most about your content creation hobby/career?

The community. I’m enjoying myself with my games but if I know my stream has entertained someone then it makes it worthwhile to me.

11. What don't you enjoy so much about your content creation hobby/career?

I don’t really have any negatives about streaming. Sometime I find it difficult to fill gaps with talking but I guess I’ll get better at that the more I do it 😊

12. What are you short term and long term goals for your channel/s?

Short term, try to get a better setup. That should be possible within the year when we move hopefully. Long term, just continue to stream and try to get more engaged with the community.

13. What advice would you give anyone looking to get into content creation?

Enjoy yourself. If you’re not enjoying it then people will probably enjoy watching you too.

14. Finally, what other content creators do you enjoy watching and recommend people check out?

A lot of the smaller streamers I used to watch have sadly stopped streaming for one reason or another. One that pumps out a lot of great content still is GameolioDan. He’s an Aussie who plays a few MMO’s and is very chill and friendly. Drop by and say hi I’m sure he’ll appreciate it https://www.twitch.tv/gameoliodan

You can find me over at https://www.twitch.tv/beckmech or https://twitter.com/Beck_Shaw. I’m also active on Rebellion’s Discord server (https://discord.gg/WNWu5y3) along with a few other developers. If you’ve got any questions about game development pop over and I’m sure someone will be able to satisfy all of your curiosities!
