JoeR247 Interviews... Ferbles

1. What is the story behind your channel name?

I was nicknamed Ferby at University and that nickname evolved to Ferbles over the subsequent 20 years.

2. What is your video game history/background and all time favourite game?

I’ve been playing games since I first used my brother’s Sinclair ZX Spectrum and Sega Master System, then my Dad introduced me to ASCII based DOS games... I’ve never looked back. Spent a while in the late 90s messing about with the Amiga A1200 and as a PC gamer, but the ease of consoles has helped me to keep up with gaming alongside my growing career and family.

Favourite game of all time has to Metal Gear Solid.

3. What/Who inspired you to start creating content on the internet?

I worked in hospital radio from my early teens, progressing to student radio and then production work at commercial stations like Viking FM and Galaxy, alongside working as a club DJ until 2007.

After that I started producing podcasts and streaming felt like a natural progression to going back to doing stuff live.

4. When did you start creating content on the internet?

I produced my first podcast in 2006 for a university student’s union, but the first regular stuff I created that’s still available is from 2013.

5. What is your content creation setup. Specs and accessories?

I’ve used a MacBook Pro since 2014 for podcast production and editing, but it strained to stream anything at a watchable resolution. I bought an old enterprise PC for about £30, changed the power supply, CPU and added a low profile GTX1650 along with some extra RAM... all from eBay so the whole thing was very cheap and it’s proven to be a reliable streaming machine when paired with a PS4 or Xbox.

For podcast recording (and stream audio now) I use a Rodecaster Pro; this thing is incredible and it does everything you would need a production studio for 20 years ago!

6. How did you find the first few weeks/months of content creation? (any funny stories/mistakes/highlights?)

I’m still in the first few months but it’s been a lot of fun. I’m not used to knowing the actual audience size from my radio days, so it’s a bit weird when you see people coming and going, but it’s been a very enjoyable experience and I’ve met some interesting people.

7. How did you grow your channel? How did you network?

I use Facebook, Twitter and Discord to network and promote my streaming, but I have still have a lot to learn about this. Hopefully an old dog can learn new tricks!

8. What has been your proudest moment so far?

The stream that got me affiliate status had 20 viewers at one point, that felt really good and I really believed I’d earned the affiliate upgrade that night.

9. How did you find the technical side of content creation? Setting up your channel, etc?

Not too bad if I’m honest. I’m a quick learner and I like to read around a subject (I’m a scientist who works in research and development IRL); also found a great support network of knowledgable streamers for some added hive mind.

Biggest thing has been moving from Mac to PC and figuring out workarounds where required.

10. What do you enjoy most about your content creation hobby/career?

It’s an opportunity to do something creative and engage with people, that’s what does it for me.

11. What don't you enjoy so much about your content creation hobby/career?

Some people take it waaaaay too seriously, to the point that it’s detrimental to them.

12. What are you short term and long term goals for your channel/s?

Short term I want to get fully set up as an affiliate so my viewers can get the most out of the channel’s added value that comes with it; this will mean becoming a little bit more proficient with photoshop and the etiquette of Twitch.

Long term I would like to develop a schedule I can stick to and continue to entertain and engage people with content they enjoy.

13. What advice would you give anyone looking to get into content creation?

Don’t be obsessed with the numbers. You’ll have good days and bad days. Try to make your streams inclusive and conversational. Most of all, enjoy it.

14. Finally, what other content creators do you enjoy watching and recommend people check out?

I love Xidik_UK who is a really interesting and well polished Minecraft streamer with a great community. I also enjoy Kitboga who am expert scam baiter and very funny with it!

Finally a guy called Ragnorrockz in the US who is very open in his streams (it felt he was using it in a therapeutic way) even when there’s no one about; he’s told some really interesting stories.

Andy Brown is a podcaster and streamer masquerading as a scientist and family man. Check out his stream at www.twitch.tv/ferbles
